Singing and music are essential ingredients in the Early Years. They strengthen every area of learning in the EYFS framework and help children achieve their Early Learning Goals. The good news is that the Sparkyard Reception Music Curriculum has everything you need to embed music and singing in every corner of your EYFS classroom.
How does it work?
The curriculum is organised into three terms, each with four steps and a choice of lesson plans. We identify the key skills covered each term – this allows teachers to choose the ones that work best for their class and setting. With useful planning documents included (content overviews, skills progression and coverage of EYFS areas of learning) teachers can follow step-by-step or ‘dip in’ from time to time!

How does it support the EYFS areas of learning?
Music and singing are at the heart of Expressive Arts and Design, boosting children’s imagination and encouraging self-expression. The Reception Music Curriculum not only supports this important area of learning, but also underpins the other six as well! Watch the video to discover how our music curriculum can support the prime and specific areas of learning in the EYFS framework:
We also recommend our guide, Sparkyard and the 7 Areas of Learning – a must-read for all teachers and included in our curriculum.
What do schools say?
We love hearing how Reception teachers use our plans to inspire learning across the curriculum. This example demonstrates how a song can boost communication skills and inspire self-initiated writing – just brilliant!
“The songs are so engaging. I did the Reception Come to the Party lesson over two weeks recently which the children LOVED. They all engaged with the instruments, characters and tea party idea really well. I heard them singing the song in the playground, in the toilets and lunch hall! That was gratifying. But two weeks AFTER we'd done that, two girls came to me and had written out all the words to the song and then sang it to me. It was really impressive and a great example of self-initiated writing.”
How does the Reception Music Curriculum help teachers to create a rich and creative curriculum that enables high-quality musical play?
The curriculum comes with a Pick & Mix feature – a bank of ideas and activities that link and enhance learning in each step. It includes adult-led activities, ideas for learning at home, along with loads of creative ways to enhance continuous provision.
